Getting A More Accurate Ping in MW2

Here’s a way to get a much more accurate ping while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For those who don’t know, ping is the measure of how long it takes to send the information of what you are doing in-game to the host’s computer, which then processes it. The host will have a ping of close to 0, since their data doesn’t have to travel to get to their own computer, while the further you physically are from the host the higher your ping is going to be. A high ping is very bad, as it creates lag between when you shoot/move and when it is registered, making it very difficult to hit moving targets, or shoot an enemy before he shoots you.

The current display of ping that IWNet shows is rather inaccurate, since it groups you very roughly into large brackets, which means that you may have a rather bad ping without knowing it. This guide shows you how to reconfigure your ping display to show a much more accurate picture of players ping, and therefore, lag. Continue reading

Showing FPS & Recording Video in MW2

This guide will help you monitor your FPS (Or Frames-Per-Second) and record videos of your games in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Why would you want to do either of those things? Well, seeing your FPS is very useful for configuring your graphics settings, and ensuring you’ve got sufficient hardware to run the game with a good FPS. Recording videos is a fun way to replay your finest or most hilarious moments, and has lead to a cottage industry of YouTube video game highlight reels. Both can be accomplished using external programs, two of which will be covered today: Xfire and Fraps.Continue reading

2500 PC Cheaters Banned

Robert Bowling tweeted over the weekend that Infinity Ward has banned 2500 “confirmed cheaters” on the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, given that we don’t exactly know how many copies Modern Warfare 2 has sold, this figure could be anything from a massive to an insignificant proportion of players.

A developer of a popular hack has stated that while some users of their hack were banned, “as soon as something turns up we strive to get the ‘program’ back up and running as soon as possible.”

One of the problems that Infinity Ward hoped to solve through IWNet was cheating, but it seems that even with extra layers and the prospect of a VAC ban, hack developers are continuing to develop hacks and users are still willing to take the risk. It seems we’re still a long way off from the squeaky-clean future that Infinity Ward had planned.

The game has “deception-based gameplay” and looks to be quite a fresh take on the genre. Continue reading

New Moudon: Fog of War Trailer

Black Shard Studios, represented on GameReplays.org by forum member domidragon, have released another teaser for their upcoming Company of Heroes machinima production Moudon: Fog of War. This trailer covers the story and setting of the film, the film being set to be released in Summer 2010. Here it is:

It’s really inspiring to see how much good cinematography can be produced using the Company of Heroes engine — as in the latest video, the quality is far beyond what you’d expect an RTS engine to deliver. This machinima is certainly one to watch, and the trailer shows just how far along they’ve come. Fog of War is certainly looking like every Company of Heroes fan’s summer blockbuster!

Watch Company of Heroes 2.600 Replays in 2.601

With new patches, invariably come new problems. While this patch is relatively mild in such matters, one problem from the very beginning of Company of Heroes still lingers. That is, the incompatibility of replay files between versions. Short of reinstalling and patching only up to 2.600, your old replays won’t work. However, with a little bit of extra effort, you can make them work again.Continue reading

Company of Heroes 2.601 Patch Released

The 2.601 hotfix for Company of Heroes has been released. This is a minor patch, fixing a Panzerkrieg exploit and making the game easier to mod.

To download the patch, simply log into Company of Heroes as normal and you’ll be prompted to start the download. If you’re worried that this download may be too slow, Relic has also put out the patch as an HTTP download and a torrent.

Although this is but a minor patch, it is nice to see that Relic is still working on improving this game so long after release. Hopefully this proves to be a precursor to a full blown patch. So get going CoH players! Your patch awaits!

Company of Heroes Online To Be Released By March 31st, 2010

THQ’s recent earnings report revealed that Company of Heroes Online, a free-to-play version of Company of Heroes, is due to be released this fiscal year. The game, which is currently being developed in cooperation with Shanda, a Chinese online game operator, has been playable since early this year.

While THQ has declined to comment specifically on Company of Heroes Online, with the recent success of free-to-play games like EA’s Battlefield Heroes it seems the perfect time to start working on the English version of title. As the game uses the same assets as normal Company of Heroes, the only work that needs to be done on the English version is translating the game’s launcher and website, and setting up a payment system for American and European customers who wish to buy premium content.

THQ will be looking to fill out their otherwise meagre 2010 lineup and Company of Heroes Online could be just the thing. It has the potential to reach a large sector of the market and bring in a lot of new Company of Heroes players.
