Popular Protoss Build Orders

These are a selection of the most popular Protoss Build Orders, taken from a Reddit thread of the same name. A redditor named Skyda provided many great build orders, but the formatting made them difficult to read and some were incomplete. I’ve taken the liberty of transcribing these build orders into a much more readable format.

Edit: I’ve added Tyler’s 2 Gate Robo and CecilSunkure’s 2 Gate Rush (Fake 4 Gate). Also, here’s a PDF for printing (generated for now, will do a custom one later).

These builds are for maps with ramps that can be blocked with one forcefield, e.g. Xel’Naga, Backwater, Delta, Metal, Shakuras and Temple. For maps with wider ramps, use 4Gate (PvP), 3 Gate Robo (PvT) and Forge Fast Expand (PvZ).

Transitions

You want to contain your opponent as long as possible, sitting at the bottom of his ramp with a Sentry and your Stalkers.

DT Rush (you see many Zealots, few Stalkers/Sentries): Immediately build a Forge at home and proceed with the attack until DTs are out.

Robo: You have two options:

  1. Remote Nexus: Take advantage of their immobility by taking a Nexus far (but not too far) from your base. If you do this, you’ll be playing for a base trade; use your faster Blink Stalkers to move around the map.
  2. Chargelots / Archon: Build a Forge and Templar Archives and start getting Archons. Dump minerals into Zealots after expanding. Rush to +1. Use your first 350 gas for Charge and a Templar Archives.

Stargate: He’s dead.

2 Warpgate Rush (Fake 4 Gate)

[one_half]

Build Order

[fancylist]

  • 9 Pylon
  • 10 Gateway, Chronoboost Probes
  • 12 Assimilator, send scouting Probe
  • 15 Cybernetics Core
  • 16 Zealot (Attack with it)
  • 22 Gateway
  • ASAP Warpgate Research and Stalker, Chrono constantly
  • ASAP 2nd Stalker
  • 26 Proxy Pylon
  • 100% Warpgate Warp in Stalkers
  • After two Warpins Get tech (e.g. Robotics)

[/fancylist][/one_half]

[one_half_last]

Notes

Use your initial Zealot and Stalker to secure the proxy Pylon. Start being aggressive once the 2nd Stalker arrives. Once you have your first warp in, go to town on their Probes. Your advantage tends to wane after two warp-ins, so begin tech (e.g. Colossus, DT, Blink) at that time.

You’ll have slightly less probes than a standard opening, but you will have those initial units much faster. This will allow you to gain an economic and tech edge over your opponent if your micro is good.

If your opponent goes for a three Stalker rush, be careful with your proxy pylons. You can still win the initial battle, but if they get a sentry before you get up the ramp it’s best to just go home.

Followups

Actually 4 Gate: If you cause good damage, follow up with two more Gates and more pressure.

Fake 4 Gate: Wait at the bottom of the ramp, and tech or expand.

Strengths/Weaknesses

Early Gas (e.g. Banshee): This is a risky build even if you gas steal.

Fast Expand (e.g. 1/2 Barracks Pressure): Strong, gives you time to get an expansion up. Don’t get too greedy about containing the Terran, as Dropships can mess you up.

[one_half_last]

Transitions

Wall, Bunker and Marines (e.g. 1/1/1 all in): Build a Robotics Facility and a Forge, placing one cannon in each mineral line. Get observers, and Immortals if Siege Tanks are seen. If Terran is going all in, cut probes and mass Zealots.

No Bunker, Marines and Marauders (2 Barracks Expand): Warp in three zealots and attack up the ramp. If you can’t, add two more gates and keep up the pressure, eventually teching to Charge and Colossi.

Marines, Low-ground Bunker (e.g. Gasless Expand): Try to kill the SCV building the bunker. If you can’t, add two more gates or take additional gases and tech quickly.

Hey William! Please, please make one for the swarm. You did nice job with it, i know you can a make a zergy :). I am very curious for that, cuz i play zörg. (=

    • Ruscour

Zerg doesn’t have build orders, Zerg is a reactive race that must do things based on what their opponent does. A build order cannot tell you when a good time to make units is or when a good time to drone is. There could be something going over things like pool before hatch to counter pylon hatch block, 13 hatch 15 pool to avoid block, double expand against FFE, and there are some builds for ZvZ (Destiny 4gate, early pool) and I guess the 3/5/7RR builds exist.

Great job to the author, awesome stuff here.

  • Nice recipes… looks yummy!

I myself like to make the 3 gate blink stalkers dish.

I always serve it hot and all my friends like it.
You can also add salt and pepper to your liking… Delicious!

  • BIGmike

One strategy i didnt see on here, one that i use almost every time, in pvt. Its a 1 gate expand in which you get a gateway then a core followed by 1 stalker. i usually get my nexus at 24 or so and continue to pump out stalkers and with more gateways quickly getting warpgate research. once i get the second base up and running i get a total of 7 gateways. i macro as much as possible and get a mix of stalkers and sentries with 5 or 6 zealots to tank. Ive found it to be very effective against terran, even when they decide to 2 rax i can still hold off the pressure. Try this out sometime and tell me what you think

  • Michael Mroz
